ESI数据库由美国科技信息所(ISI)于2001年推出,旨在衡量科学研究绩效、跟踪科学发展趋势。高被引论文(Highly Cited Paper)指过去10年中发表的论文中被引频次在该学科中相同发表年论文中排名前1%的论文。热点论文(Hot Papers)是指与同领域和同时期出版的论文相比,在出版后很快就得到较高引用的论文。热点论文入选的条件是出版时间不超过2年,而且是在当前两个月内被引。根据以上条件,最后每个领域前0.1%的论文得以入选。目前,ESI已成为当今世界范围内普遍用以评价高会、学术机构、国家/地区国际学术水平及影响力的重要评价指标工具之一,ESI高被引论文和热点论文也成为支撑高会一流学科建设的一个重要指标。
